Senator Hilary Clinton spoke in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today as the Secretary of State designate.  She lightly touched on the lack of leadership in the Bush administration, but focused more on her plans for the future.  Clinton spoke of not giving up on the Israel-Palistinian Peace Process.  She also reiterated Obama’s plans for exhausting diplomacy with both Iran and Syria, as well as intentions to improve relations with the designate superpowers, Russia and China.

The biggest issue that Clinton will be forced to pour her energies into is of course the Middle East Conflict, which will involve relations with all nations in that area.  The crucible of this problem began in 1948 when the British Mandate on Palestine expired, leaving a supposed opening for the Jewish community to declare itself the State of Israel, leaving the Palestinians to the small strips of land bordering Israel.  This was of course beneficial to the Jewish people living all over the world who had never had a homeland.  And detrimental to all the non-Jewish people living in what was formerly called Palestine.

The current administration, of which both Clinton and Obama are so adamant on respecting, is turning their attentions on saying goodbye to America.  They are having their last media hurrahs for the history books, doing interviews, press conferences, and bestowing “Medals for Freedom”.

While the old regime is stepping down, and the new regime is respecting the old, the death toll in Gaza has reached 971.  Just last night 19 children died.  Since Israel’s goal is to stop Hamas from shooting rockets, and Hamas will never stop shooting rockets as long as Israel is bombing them, the war is going to continue until somebody steps in.  Egypt is doing its best to broker a cease-fire, and the UN has also asked for both sides to end the fighting.  But none of this has amounted to anything, with journalists reporting Israel reservists making preparations for a deepening of the ground assault.  Are we, America, going to allow Israel to continue its assault on the Palestinians while we blow up balloons for the inauguration?  Can’t the present administration do anything?  By America’s turning our heads away from the problem are we condoning it?  As the financiers of Israel’s military, do we have any responsibility for the decisions that they make?
